Culture scholarships Year: 2025
Julia Sporsén

“My goal is for the audience to forget that I am singing — for the expression itself to make everything else fade away.”
Though Julia Sporsén’s roots in Gothenburg’s musical life might seem inevitable, her path home went through London, where she studied and built a successful opera career before returning to Sweden. Since her 2015 debut at the Göteborg Opera, she has been widely praised for her deeply expressive interpretations and magnetic stage presence. In March 2026, she will return to the same stage in the title role of Janáček’s Jenůfa.
Motivation:
Coming from a well-known musical family in Gothenburg, Julia Sporsén has in recent years established herself as one of Sweden’s finest operatic sopranos.
After studies in Stockholm and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, she achieved her breakthrough in 2022 with the title role in Bellini’s Norma at Folkoperan (The Folk Opera), earning her Svenska Dagbladet’s (The Swedish Daily New’s) Opera Award. She has since received critical acclaim for her performances in Gösta Nystroem’s Herr Arnes Penningar (Sir Arne’s Treasure), as Desdemona in Verdi’s Othello, and as the lead in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, all at the Göteborg Opera.
For her dramatic intensity, expressive soprano voice, and profound interpretive artistry, Julia Sporsén is awarded the 2025 Scholarship from the Sten A Olsson Foundation for Research and Culture.
