Alec Frank-Gemmill

“I’ve been told that I’m addicted to music, which is probably true.”
UK-born Alec Frank-Gemmill has been principal horn for the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra since 2019 following a decade in the same position with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Alongside a successful career as an acclaimed soloist and guest principal horn for numerous European orchestras, he is also the founder of Odin Ensemble, a Gothenburg-based 15-piece orchestra specializing in music from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Here, he is not only an instrumentalist, but also the conductor, an opportunity he intends to explore more thoroughly.
Motivation:
Hornist Alec Frank-Gemmill is celebrated for his virtuoso technique, exceptional tone, and musical sensibility. As of 2019, he is principal horn of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, after a decade in the same position with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Both as a soloist, as well as in chamber ensembles and orchestras, his music is characterized by passionate curiosity and a flair for meaningful elements. Alec Frank-Gemmill’s repertoire spans from the sound world of Early Music to that of contemporary composers, and he masters the horn in all its historic varieties, from the natural horn and on.
For his ever-evolving and expanding artistry, Alec Frank-Gemmill is awarded the 2023 Culture Scholarship from the Sten A Olsson Foundation for Research and Culture.
